Bozell Wins Unprecedented 11th Kalamazoo Championship
Andy Bozell was involved in a first lap crash Saturday night that landed him into a 17th place finish, but he still emerged as the Outlaw Late Model champion for 2008. Bozell collected his 11th championship (10 of the last 11) at Kalamazoo, and added to his incredible racing resume. As for the race itself, Phil Massuch came out on top of a late race duel with Phil Bozell to collect his first win of the year. Trent Hellenga had a career best third place finish ahead of Jeff Ganus, Brandon Lyons, Randy Day, Dave Lober, Jerry Drake, Mike Brooks and Bill Tomlinson. Kenny Head was quick time and Massuch won the Fast Car Dash.
Brian Bergakker finally locked up a championship by winning the 2008 Kalamazoo Speedway Modified championship. He did it in style by winning Saturday night’s feature in dominating fashion. He held off Chris Orr, Harry Foote, Jeff Ganus and Mark Fliearman. AJ Foote, Michelle Sexton, Mark Shook, Dan Frazier and Brent Hook rounded out the top ten. AJ Foote again broke the Modified track record with a time of 13.605, while Ganus won the Fast Car Dash.
Bryan VanZile held off a hard charging Courtney Weston to win the Sportsman feature. Weston locked up his first ever Kalamazoo Speedway championship with his performance. Buddy Head, Mickey Cornwell and Matt Corliss rounded out the top five. Dave Cutler, Rick McMullen, Jim Kollath, Mark Horton and Lee Slaton completed the top ten. Mark Horton set quick time while Cory Kruzel won the dash.
Greg Haynes locked up the Pure Stock championship by simply starting the feature; which turned out to be a blessing, since a first lap mechanical problem relegated him to a 16th place finish. BS Motorsports driver Brad Shellengbarger; collected the feature victory over Lloyd Brooks, Jamison Russell, Jeff Wanamaker and Ron Chaffee. Jacob Caines, Seth Moody, Jimmy Wheaton, Keith Wilfong and Kenneth Dodd rounded out the top ten. Jacob Caines was also quick time, while Russell won the dash.
Kalamazoo Speedway will be quiet next week as we awaiting the second annual Call of the Wild, on Saturday September 21. This will be a tune up for the 22nd annual Super Shoe Nationals coming up October 3-5. For more information log onto kalamazoospeedway.com.
