Owosso, Michigan (Tuesday, December 1, 2009): The Michigan Short Track Racing Club (MSTRC) is proud to present the 7th annual MSTRC Bowling Tournament. The widely popular fundraising event will once again be held at the immaculate Capitol Bowl in downtown Owosso, Michigan on Saturday, February 13th, 2010.
The annual bowling tournament and bench racing extravaganza for the short track racing community in the state of Michigan was started in 2004 as a way for the racing community in the great auto racing state of Michigan to get together over the winter and bowl for a great cause.
The MSTRC Bowling Tournament is now one of the biggest fundraisers dedicated to the short track racing industry in the State of Michigan for racing families in need. This year’s tournament will once again benefit two well known family members of the racing community in the Great Lakes State.
The first beneficiary of the 7th annual MSTRC Bowling Tournament will be Jeremy “Jake” Dickman, who serves as Webmaster for the Mt. Pleasant Speedway and is also the Community Editor for the Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun newspaper in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. The 36-year-old was born with Severe Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and despite his condition is still a viable contributor to the short track racing community.
Since 1999, Dickman has been the Webmaster at Mt. Pleasant Speedway and is an avid race fan because of his late grandfather, who raced in the 1950s and 1960s, Dickman has been attending Mt. Pleasant since 1981 when he was 8-years-old. In an effort to combine his love for racing and journalism, Dickman began writing weekly racing columns on Fridays for the Morning Sun in 2007. He has also written several articles for the Michigan Racing Scene.
The second beneficiary will be Alan Taft, owner of A.T. Racing Engines in Ovid, Michigan. The 1975 Owosso Speedway Flying Stocks (Now Pro Stocks) and 1994 Modifieds Track Champion is also a former Super Late Models driver and is one of the very few people still alive that has raced on every configuration of Owosso Speedway in the tracks history! The 53-year-old was diagnosed with MRSA Pneumonia in April 2009 and was in a coma from then until June 2009. After spending two more months at the Ovid Healthcare Center, Taft went home on August 7th, 2009.
A.T. Racing Engines was founded in 1985 and currently Taft builds motors for drivers such as; 2008-2009 Spartan Speedway Super Late Models Track Champion, Jimmy Gallagher as well as Dirt Super Late Model star, Zach Olger, his brother, Dirt Modifieds pilot, Luke Olger, Short Track Trucks.com Challenge Series driver, Dave Parisian, and many more. In addition, one of the top School Bus Figure 8 drivers in the Midwest, Phil Ehlert, uses engines provided by Taft.
The 7th Annual MSTRC Bowling Tournament will begin with Sign In and Lane Assignments at "High Noon" 12:00p.m., with an Optional "Hot Laps" / Practice session beginning at 12:30p.m. Practice will end at 1:15p.m. Then after the random drawing for partners, bowling will start at approximately 1:30p.m.
A $10.00 donation is all it costs to join in on the fun and all participants will bowl Two (2) Games. Participants don't even have to bowl with their partner! Everyone can still bowl with the group you came with on one or more lanes.
In addition, you don't even have to bowl to participate! Everyone is encouraged to come out and support this annual event. Their will be numerous door prizes to be given away throughout the afternoon as well as 50/50 drawings and several special prizes to be distributed.
The NASCAR Nationwide Series 2010 season will be shown live from Daytona International Speedway on the surrounding televisions throughout the massive bowling alley for the participants to keep up with while bowling.
Following the bowling tournament, the MSTRC Bowling Tournament Awards Ceremony will be held approximately 45-60 minutes after the completion of Bowling in the bowling alleys' adjacent lounge, "The Capitol Bowl Hot Spot."
Later on in the evening hours, the classic rock band “Basement Dawgs” with veteran Modified driver, Matt Schindewolf, from Onondaga, Michigan who was a benefactor during the fifth annual bowling tournament, will be bringing his band back to the Capitol Bowl Hot Spot for the third year in a row for a night of classic rock and roll.
Capitol Bowl is located at 219 South Washington Street behind the J.C. Penny's store and Roma’s Back Door Pizzeria and directly across the street from Jumbo’s Bar in Downtown Owosso, Michigan. During the sixth edition of the tournament back on February 14, 2009, Capitol Bowl was jam packed as the tournament benefitted two family members of the racing community; The Newman Family of New Lothrop, Michigan and Daniel “Doc” Dutton of Lansing, Michigan.
A new record 130 bowlers crammed into the 24-lane bowling alley in downtown Owosso and the amount raised for the two beneficiaries was a MSTRC Bowling Tournament record; $2,526.50! In addition to the record amount bowlers and money raised, records were broken all over in the bowling portion of the tournament as well.
MSTRC Bowling Tournament Committee Member, Ed Inloes, the Co-Announcer at Auto City Speedway and Voice of the Spartan Speedway, along-with Spartan Pony Stock driver, Randy Kretzinger, Jr., were crowned the overall winners as they combined to roll a 751 in the two games bowled to win the Team High Series awards!
2009 Spartan Speedway Pony Stock Track Champion, Wayne Beckner, Jr., rolled the highest game of the tournament with a 268, which tied the all-time highest game set in 2005 by Susan Kelley, which is also the all-time Women’s High Score, and tied in 2008 by George Lord. Wayne Beckner, Sr., won the Men’s High Series title with a 506 series.
As for the women, Kim Lauderdale was the winner of Women’s High Game with a 178 and also rolled a high series of 314. In MSTRC Bowling Tournament tradition, no one bowler can win more than one award, so Kris Hudson was awarded the Women’s High Series trophy with a 289 series.
Misty Allen, another Pony Stock driver at Spartan Speedway picked up the renamed Greg Yost Memorial Never Give Up Award after bowling a 46. The award was renamed in honor of the late Greg Yost, a benefactor during the 3rd annual tournament, who passed away in August of 2006.
For the third year in a row, “Team Big Mouth” took the special Traveling Team Award pitting Team Big Mouth against Team Gone Fishin. Team Big Mouth consisted of; Ted Carpenter, Ed Inloes, Dave Kennedy, Matt Prieur and Shaun Whitney.
In a touching tribute during the Awards Ceremony, the Founder of the Michigan Short Track Racing Club, Chuck Darling was presented with a special Autographed Clock as a token of appreciation while Matt Prieur, the Voice of the Dixie Motor Speedway and Owosso Speedway, was the winner of the 2008 / 2009 Chris Throgmartin Dedication and Spirit Award.
The MSTRC Bowling Tournament started in 2004 and for the first three years, was held at Nic’s Restaurant and Bowl (Formerly Tri-Ami Lanes) in Ovid, Michigan. In 2007, a decision was made to move the tournament to a bigger facility and the newly renovated Capitol Bowl in downtown Owosso, Michigan and since then, Capitol Bowl has been the home of the MSTRC Bowling Tournament and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.
Past beneficiaries of the MSTRC Bowling Tournament include; Buck Harsen (2004), Michael Putnam (2005), the Crook Family (2005), the Bouwman Family (2006), the late Greg Yost (2006), Verwayne Greenhoe (2007), the Persails Family (2007), Chad Faur (2008), Matt Schindewolf (2008), the Newman Family (2009), and Daniel “Doc” Dutton (2009).
As in years past, the beneficiaries were decided on by the membership of the Michigan Short Track Racing Club as Nominations were presented on the MSTRC message board and decided on by the senior members of the MSTRC Bowling Tournament Committee. That committee consists of; Brenda and Chuck Darling, Linda and Ed Inloes, Elaine and Matt Prieur, and Verwayne Greenhoe.
