Dietsch Takes SuperPro Win
By Michelle Sprague
On Friday, July 10th, the SuperPro Series made a stop at the Spartan Speedway to run their 75 lap feature, sponsored by Lipari Foods. Jason Dietsch, of Edgerton, OH, set fast time during qualifying and started on row four, by virtue of an eight-car invert. Mark Hankosky and Kyle Hayden brought the field down to the green, with Hayden taking the early lead, but had company as Tom Smith tacked himself on to Hayden’s rear bumper. Back in the pack, Rob Buckley issued a challenge for fourth on Marchiniak but couldn’t make it stick. Smith and Hayden ran door handle to door handle for first, as Buckley dove under Marchiniak for fourth. Smith took the lead and put some distance between Hayden, in second, as Buckley set his sights on Hankosky for third. Buckley moved into third then went to work on Hayden for second, with Dietsch breaking into the top five. Dietsch was sitting on Buckley’s back bumper, as Buckley took a look to the low side of Hayden but couldn’t complete the pass. Buckley looked to the outside of Hayden as Deitsch dove under Buckley to take away the third position. Smith continued to open up a sizeable lead, as Dietsch reeled in Hayden for second, dropped to the low side and the duo ran side by side. Dietsch cleared Hayden and set his sights on Smith. Dietsch methodically gained ground on Smith, catching him with 18 laps to go. Smith and Dietsch ran side by side for a number of laps, with the cars getting together going into turn two. Dietsch grabbed the lead and pulled away from the field, as Smith gathered his car back up to continue running in the second position. Buckley got around Hayden, moving into the third position while Mike Kugler rounded out the top five. At the checker, it was Dietsch, Smith, Buckley, Hayden, and Kugler as the top five finishers.
Twenty-five Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modifieds took to the track for their 35-lap feature with Wayne Haughton and Dusty Carl on the front row. When the green flag dropped, Carl took off like a shot, leaving Haughton, Leroy Ellis, Bill Butler and Sonny Coito to duke it out. Ellis couldn’t find a way around Haughton to advance into second, while Butler and Coito battled for fourth. Coito was able to get around Butler on lap eleven to hold down the fourth position, while Haughton was able to fend off Ellis to come home in second. At the stripe, it was Carl, Haughton, Ellis, Coito, and Butler. Jim Heeney, John Mamula, and Carl took heat wins, while Ken Buchner took the Consi win with Jim Kennedy, Megan Carpenter and Rob Newman transferring into the feature.
Jimmy Scavarda took his second win of 2009 in the Performance Automotive NW Sportsman division. Matt Kirchen took the early lead at the start of the 25-lap feature and led the first 12 laps, with Bubber Patrick hot on his trail. Scavarda worked his way to the front from the high groove, taking the lead on lap 13. Dane Long took the second spot from Kirchen one lap later and went to work on Scavarda, eventually getting into him, relinquishing the second spot to Jack Koone Jr, the heat winner. Patrick was able to hold off Long for third, while Kirchen rounded out the top five.
Lex Jarecki found his way to the Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle for his win in the Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stock division. On the start, Brad Harbenski was shown as the leader, with Jarecki taking away the lead just four laps in, as Brian Beckner drove to the front of the pack to sit in the second position, by lap five, behind Jarecki. Todd Metz Jr. and Patrick Denison battled for the third position, running side by side for six laps, with Denison taking the spot away. Wayne Beckner Jr. had fought his way into the top five, taking the fourth spot away from Metz with five laps to go. At the line, it was Jarecki, B. Beckner, Denison, W. Beckner Jr., and Metz Jr. Misty Allen captured her first Spartan heat win, while Denison took the second heat win.
Matt Childers jumped out to the early lead in the Spartan Pure Stock 20-lap feature over Rob Clark and Ian Schafer. Lonnie Saumier and Jordan Lechota ran down Childers and made it three-wide for the lead on lap three. Saumier took over the top spot, with Lechota sitting in second over Childers. Saumier was out for a Friday night drive with the rest of the field stretched out over tight ¼-mile, and as the checkered flag waved, it was Saumier, Lechota, Childers, Clark, and Jake Pearson. Lechota took the heat win.
