Saturday night at Crystal Motor Speedway was another big night of all
the regular action but with the added excitement of school bus races
thrown in. The event was sponsored by Engine Pro. Area school bus
drivers put on a good show in both their heat and the feature that was
eventually won by Sonya Petersen of the Kent Intermediate School
District in a 12 bus field.
The Port City Racing Pro Trucks led off the feature schedule with Mike
Kresnak taking full advantage of his pole position as he jumped out of
a quick lead. Scott Nieman was tight behind, along with Chris Verhaar
and Tim Hansen. As Kresnak motored along, Verhaar and Nieman battled
to challenge him. Hansen broke something a tie rod on the left front
that kept him from being able to steer effectively and he began to
fade back as Tim Wood began his march to the front. Kresnak was
challenged late by Verhaar but went on to claim his second feature win
of 2009. Verhaar was second, followed by Nieman, Wood, Jerry Koons,
Robert Verhaar, Brian LeBaron, Hansen, Shad Parks, and Tim Sooy.
Nieman won the heat.
The opening laps of the KFC sponsored Late Model feature set the tone
for the entire race as Kurt Mesman and Scott Haney put on a side by
side battle for the lead for at least five laps, with first one and
then the other taking the point, all with Dean Huizenga riding oh so
tightly behind them. Haney was finally able to eke out a small lead
but found him self being pursued by Brock Cogswell and Mark Andersen.
Haney began to stretch out a lead but that disappeared when Tom
Sprague and then Matt Pickard tangled after contact with the front
stretch wall. On the restart, Haney once again motored to the lead
with Andersen and Kevin Nelson Jr giving chase. With a lap to go,
Nelson put forth a mighty effort by Haney was able to hold him back to
gather his first feature win on 2009. Nelson was followed by Andersen,
Jay Van Dyke, Cogswell, Kyle Borgman, Justin McNeill, Tom Dusen, Rick
Stout, and Brian Nickerson. McNeill won the B Main with heats falling
to Huizenga, Haney, and Pickard.
Engine Pro IMCA Modified action was hot and heavy but all of it was
behind the leaders, Joe Fowler and Dan Wiggins. While the rest of the
field was running two, three, and often four wide, Fowler was able to
engage the cruise with Wiggins not far back. Milt Montgomery, Mike
Vandermark Jr, and Brennan Bowen were able to run in the pack
immediately behind Fowler with Bowen creeping forward using the very
bottom of the track but Fowler was not to be headed on this night. The
St Charles native gathered his second feature event of the season,
closely followed by Wiggins, Bowen, Montgomery, Vandermark, Jr., J.R.
Schmid, Chad Maurer, Josh Borton, Jerry Hunt, and Buzz Lawrence. B
Mains were won by Rich White and Hunt while Vandermark Jr, Schmid,
Montgomery, and Fowler collected heat wins for their resumes.
The Smokers Club of Mt Pleasant sponsored Street Stock race saw Dan
Willmore, Will Stanley, and Kevin Rohn fight for the lead from start
to finish. Willmore was running a particularly strong race but had
Rohn beside him, just behind him, and in front of him no matter where
he turned. Mark Lamb and Larry Kosloski duked it out for position just
behind that pack while the rest of the field ran in a tight bunch just
behind them. Rohn eventually was able to escape the battle with
Willmore and went on to win his third feature this season over
Willmore, Stanley, Kosloski, Lamb, Roger Stewart, Lloyd Long, Jeff
Fisher, Anthony Carlton, and Brooke Ann Brasington. Rohn and Stanley
took heats.
The Races On The Web Flinn Stocks saw Cory Burch and Gavin Parks take
the early front spots but Burch developed problems and fell back after
an early strong run. Parks took the lead with Dan Corder and Brady
Hollenbeck in hot pursuit and Ashlee Scott closing in fast. Coming
down to the last three laps, Scott looked to move forward as Parks and
entourage hit lapped traffic but her machine slowed suddenly and she
was forced to pull into the infield. Parks cruised on to his second
win in two weekends, followed by Hollenbeck, Corder, Ken Zeigler, Adam
Bernath, Neil Zeigler, Lee Zahm, Scott, James Wright, and Burch. Parks
also won the heat event.
The final event of the night was the Port City Racing Pro Stocks.
Former Flinn Stock champion, Kyle Shattuck, began to show his
potential in the domain of the bigger dogs as he not only grabbed the
lead but actually began to open up a lead. Jeff Loomis, Nate Jones,
and Terry LaClear battled behind him. As that battle raged, Chaney
Newland and Vern Buskirk began their charge to the front, with Newland
making his way to second just about the time something let go in
Shattuck’s machine and he turned the lead over to Newland. The
remaining few laps was a battle to see if Buskirk could haul in
Newland but he had to settle for second as Newland brought home his
third feature win of 2009. Buskirk was followed by Jones, LaClear,
Jeff Reist, Mike Husted, Todd Bush, Ryan Kent, Derrick Dennis, and
Jason Borton. Shattuck and Buskirk won heat gold.
