Frodo Scores Win on Record Setting Night
(Kalamazoo, MI) The Kalamazoo Speedway played host played host to a record setting crowd for the Night of Destruction with over 5,600 people jammed into the stands. This was the largest crowd in over the 50 year history of the World’s Fastest 3/8 Track. The cars were lined up all the way to Owen Drive and D Avenue up to US 131.
The LKQ Self Service Cyber Stocks were in action with Maggie Zwart setting fast time for the first time in her racing career. Maggie became the first women to set time for the first time in many years at the Kalamazoo Speedway, but she did become the youngest female to ever set fast time at 14 years of age. The LKQ Cyber Stocks saw a big 25 lap feature that saw one heck of a battle between the top five cars. Nick Laymen took the early lead and swapped back and fourth Corey “Frodo” Lutz for several laps before Corey finally took the lead back for good. Corey had to hold of late challenge from Keith Dunham in the final laps, but Dunham would have to settle for second followed by Nick Laymen, Larry Peloquin, Mike Stemmes, Travis Krum, Eric Hall, Clark Smith, Danny McIntyre, and Maggie Zwart rounding out the top 10.
In other action Fred McDonald picked $250 in the Spectator Drags in his Eagle Talon. In the ever exciting Bus Races we took a different approach to find the winner by asking the crowd to vote by applause to who was the most entertaining. When the smoke settled it was voted that John Russell was the most entertaining by just edging out former ASA star Dave Sensiba in the voting. John Russell also took the win in the first ever trailer races.
The much anticipated Super Shoe Nationals is getting ready to take west Michigan by storm, as nearly 250 cars & drivers are starting to gather at the Zoo in the back forty camping area already. Besides more racing that you will ever see anywhere in 3 days, and perhaps one of the best party weekends for all of the Midwest racers & fans, the Super Shoe continues to be the “Grand Finale” of all racing events. New for this year will be the addition of two bands playing on both Friday & Saturday night, over on the Party Deck in between turns 3 & 4. Playing on Friday from 10PM-1AM will be the Basement Dawgs, out of Onondaga, playing a good mix of Country, Pop, Oldies & Rock & Roll! Then On Saturday, we will have In a Blaze of Glory, right here from Kalamazoo. These boys are “rockers” and they will play some serious rock & roll for all to listen to from 11PM to 1:30 AM, over on the same hospitality deck. The bands are both starting after the racing events are finished, so of course there is no charge to go over on the deck to hang out & dance for a couple hours, while listening to some live music!
