Action-packed night at Berlin Raceway
Bonstell, Troup, A. Davis, Schied, Oliver, and Schnabel take home trophies
Marne, MI— Weather plagued Berlin Raceway once again and after a two hour rain delay, every effort was made to get feature racing started at 9:00 p.m. The fans who rode out the rain were treated to an exciting night of racing with extra laps for the De-Jay Slick Truck Pro Stocks and double features for the Instant Cash Advance Sportsman and Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder divisions.
The night got started with the Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder feature that was rained out from Saturday, June 7. #00 Robin Maley and #77 Gerry Shepard lead the field to the green flag and after two complete restarts due to the ambitious car of #7 Ryan Hamm, the race was underway. The racing was three wide in a hurry and #7 Jake Loesch grabbed the lead early, but he couldn't keep it for long. By lap 5, #100 Jason Schied overtook Loesch and began to pull away. Schied went on to get his first win with an impressive 3.109 seconds over Loesch. The rest of the top ten were #14 Jason DeVos, #76 Mike Speet, Hamm, #77s Sketer Jacobson, #354 Chris McKinley, #77 Gerry Shepard, #26 Chad Wittingen and Maley.
In the Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder rained out “B” feature, #22 Jordan Jewett and #11 Brian Gregerson started on the front row in what was a wild race. On the first lap, Jewett and #4 Ron Myers were off the backstretch and Myers car ended up on its lid. Myers was OK, returned to the race and took the lead on lap 3 once the race was restarted. The feature was littered with caution flags and once they were restarted, Gregerson and #07 Clayton Brown were battling for the lead. Lap 12 saw a huge six-car battle for the lead and the #626 of Brandon Oliver prevailed. #31 Dave Marshall was in second and closing in on Oliver, but he ran out of laps. Oliver got the win and completing the top ten were Marshall, #97 Kevin Katt, Brown, #13 Craig Snoeyink, Gregerson, Myers, #9 Matt Holcomb, #67 Steve Root and #07 Kyle Bursley.
The rained out Instant Cash Advance Sportsman feature rolled next with #51 Sara Moerman and #88 Lisa Crawford leading the field. #00 Dennis Mann passed Moerman for the lead and #40 Dave Cutler was also in the mix for the top spot for six laps until they came upon slower cars. Running hard and trying to get around the slower cars, Mann scraped the wall and slowed Cutler; #57 Allan Troup had enough time to react and found himself with the lead on lap 9. Troup pulled away from the field and his second career win and first of the 2008 season by 4.229 seconds over #33 Allen Davis. #44 Brian VanZalen, #6 Terry Bockheim, #22 Ken Roelofs, #2 Shawn Simon, Cutler, #48 Brandon Wright, #38 Maurice Davis and #52 Nick Sherrington made up the top ten.
The 40-lap De-Jay Slick Truck Pro Stock feature was up with #29 Jeremy Munniksma on the pole and #26 Brian Thome on his outside. Munniksma maintained the lead with #8 Sadie Klein on his bumper, but before the field completed a lap, there was a multi-car wreck on coming out of turn 4. The cars of #76 Brian Tillema, #15 Garison Jewett, #20J George Munniksma and #17 Ryan Meldrum were all involved. On the restart, Klein was challenging for the lead, but #26 Brian Thome, #11 Nick Bonstell and #61 Jack DeJong were all looking for the second position. Lap 7, Klein made her way around Munniksma and was holding her own on the outside against DeJong. Caution was out again during a close battle in the lead pack; #15 Scott Root went off the backstretch when DeJong's car drifted up into Root's. Klein had a great restart and the racing settled down for a few laps. Bonstell was closing in on Klein and he took the lead from her on lap 27 and that's when Klein's car started to fade. Klein found herself off the backstretch a few laps after being passed and she also spun on the frontstretch. Once Bonstell got the lead, he held on to it and got his second win of the season. #50 Justin Regnerus, DeJong, #51 Weston Jewett, #36 Ken Smith, Jr., #76 Ryan Gruppen, Root, Munniksma, Thome and #20 David Hull rounded out the top ten.
The Instant Cash Advance Sportsman cars made their second appearance of the night, #51 Sara Moerman was on the pole again and for this race, #52 Nick Sherrington was on her outside. Sherrington took off with the lead, but by lap 4, #33 Allen Davis was challenging and by lap 11, he made the pass and began to pull away from the field. With laps winding down, the leaders were coming up on slower cars and while they slowed Davis, he was still able to hold off his competitors to get his first win of the season. The rest of the top ten were #6 Terry Bockheim, Sherrington, #44 Brian VanZalen, #2 Shawn Simon, #57 Allan Troup, #22 Ken Roelofs, #38 Maurice Davis, #40 Dave Cutler and # 48 Brandon Wright.
In the second 15-lap Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder feature of the night, #9 Nick Curtis and #024 Cole Roelofs started on the front row, but it didn’t take long for #100 Jason Schied to find his way back to the front after getting his first win earlier in the night. The quick cars of #14 Jason DeVos, #7 Jake Loesch and #7 Ryan Hamm were making their way to the front of the field, but the caution free race let Schied stretch out his lead over #76 Mike Speet. There was not stopping Schied; he got his second career win on the same night that he got his first and he became the first 4-Cylinder driver to have multiple wins this season. Speet, Loesch, #77s Sketer Jacobson, DeVos, Hamm, Curtis, #77 Gerry Shepard, #00 Robin Maley and #00 Mike Dutcher made up the top ten.
The cars of #65 Paul Ritchie and #65A Andy Church comprised the front row for the second Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder “B” feature. The race was off to a rocky start when #626 Brandon Oliver, #8 Brandon Lesert and #22 Jordan Jewett were all involved in a wreck in turn 1. After the clean-up, the race was completely restarted with Church leading. His lead was short-lived as #07 Rick Schnabel look the lead on lap 5 and he proceeded to drive away from the field. Schnabel went on the win and #01 Rob Shoemaker, #9 Matt Holcomb, Church, #07 Clayton Brown, #111 Sean Regts, #31 Greg Matheson, #151 Keenan Jewett, #13 Craig Snoeyink and #7x Terry Lange completed the top ten.
The last event of the night was the School Bus race. Billy Krupp held off ASA’s Brad Barlow and Matt Prieur and Greg Matheson to get his first school bus win of the season.
