McNett to Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle
By Michelle Sprague
Lipari Foods and Andrews Chevrolet teamed up to sponsor the evening’s events at the Spartan Speedway that saw the Super Lates back in action on Friday, August 21st. Dewitt’s Jon McNett was able to outrun veteran driver, Dave Stehouwer, for the win in the Andrew’s Chevrolet Super Late division 40-lap feature. Stehouwer took the early lead but McNett, working the outside lane, took the spot away. Evan Barrett was the man on the move when he dove under Stehouwer, washed up the track and got into Stehouwer. Barrett tapped out and took his place at the tail of the field. On the restart, it was McNett, Stehouwer, Bill Heeney Jr., Jimmy Gallagher and Logan Beckwith running nose to tail. McNett pulled away from the field, leaving Stehouwer to run solo in second. The battle was for third as Heeney had his hands full holding off Gallagher. Rounding out the top five, at the stripe, was Heeney, Gallagher and Beckwith. Dale Lewis and Heeney took heat wins.
The Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modifieds saw John Mamula jump out to the early lead over Wayne Haughton and Sonny Coito in the division’s 35-lap feature. Coito took the second spot from Haughton, as Dusty Carl and Travis Eddy battled for position. The duo ran side by side for lap after lap until Eddy got the advantage and then ran down Coito to take over the second spot. Bud Perry set his sights on Coito in third with Leroy Ellis right on his tail. Eddy dropped to the low side of Mamula and got a great run off of turn two to take away the top spot with 10 laps to go. At the checker, it was Midland’s Eddy with the win over Mamula, Coito, Perry and Ellis. Rob Newman and Bill Butler scored heat wins for the division.
Lansing’s Brian Beckner came from the back of the thirteen car field to win the 20-lap Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stock feature. Patrick Denison made one last ditch effort on lap 19 to take the spot away, but Beckner was able to fend him off. Brian’s brother Wayne had a stellar run from the tail of the field as well, fighting his way up to a third place finish ahead of Lex Jarecki and Edson Rowley III. Heat wins went to Misty Allen and Patrick Denison.
Holt’s Jimmy Scavarda made it a clean sweep, taking both the heat and feature win in the Performance Automotive NW Sportsman division. Dane Long opted out of qualifying and the heat race knowing that he only had to start the feature to sew up the point lead for the division. At the line, it was Scavarda, Long, Kirchen and Grant Hudgens.
The Spartan Pure Stock division saw Joe O’Leary take on Lonnie Saumier as the duo battled for the win in the Pure Stock division. O’Leary took the lead from Ian Schafer on lap two, with Saumier quickly catching him to challenge for the lead. Schafer and Matt Childers were duking it out for third as Josh Sevenski was battling an ill-handling car. O’Leary was able to hold off Saumier for the win followed by Schafer, Childers and Sevenski. O’Leary took the heat win as well.
