The holiday weekend at Crystal Motor Speedway was a huge two day event
that drew good crowds in both the stands and in the pits. Saturday
night was ‘Janet Zeigler Memorial” night in honor of long time track
employee Janet Zeigler. A total of 136 cars were on hand for the event
while Sunday night found the Michigan Traditional Sprints series in
town and a driver count of 145 along with excellent crowds both
nights.
In the Races On The Web sponsored Flinn Stock division on Saturday,
despite a great run by Gavin Parks and Brady Hollenbeck, Ashlee Scott
continued her dominance of the division as she pocketed her third
consecutive win over Hollenbeck, Cory Burch, Daniel Corder II, Lee
Zahm, Randall Stevens, Scott Kimball, Zach Rummer, and Zach Messner
with Hollenbeck and Scott also scoring heat wins.
Sunday night, Parks was able to get his line together and held off a
late charge from Scott from deep in the field for his first feature
win. Scott was second followed by Burch, Tyler McGhan, Harley Farkle,
Jeff Daniels, Zahm, Rummer, Hollenbeck, and Adam Bernath. Burch and
Parks took the heats.
Saturday action in the Kentucky Fried Chicken Late Models saw Kevin
Nelson Jr win a caution free affair as he won over Kyle Borgman, Danny
Knowles, Brock Cogswell, Dale Sheehy, Tim Stott, Brian Nickerson, Mark
Andersen, Dean Huizenga, and Jay Van Dyke. Scott Wenell took the B
feature win and heats were racked up by Cogswell, Knowles, and Sheehy.
On Sunday, Borgman put on a great showing as he took, then lost, and
regained the lead on his way to grabbing the feature win. Matt Pickard
pulled in second, followed by Rob Taylor, Tom Dusen, Jeff Kohn,
Sheehy, Andersen, Huizenga, Van Dyke, and Carl Ries making up the top
ten cars. Kohn was the winner of the B feature and Mike Nichols,
Taylor, and Van Dyke all took heat wins.
The Engine Pro IMCA Modified action was hot and heavy both nights with
Jerry Hunt returning to Winners Circle for the first time in a couple
years as he held off Brad Roberts, Josh Borton, J.R. Schmid, Chad
Maurer, Mike Vandermark, Jr., Rich White, Jimmy Hale, Jr., Robert
Putt, and Clifford Denman in the main feature while Matt Szecsodi and
Maurer claimed B main wins. Denman, Hunt, Travis Fisher, and Milt
Montgomery all chalked up heat victories.
Sunday action saw Columbia, TN visitor Jason Maurer put on a show as
he won top honors over Montgomery, younger brother Chad Maurer,
Borton, Chad Wernette, Rusty Zeigler, Denman, Jimmy Hale, Brennan
Bowen, and Buzz Lawrence. Semi feature winners were Vandermark Jr and
Chad Maurer with Montgomery, Carl Thayer, Jason Maurer, and Aaron Raby
claiming heat wins.
The Port City Racing sponsored Pro Stocks had some great racing both
nights with Chaney Newland claiming the win Saturday night over multi
time champ Jeff Reist, Terry LaClear, Ryan Kent, Mike Husted, Derrick
Dennis, Greg Mandoka, Barry Rinard, Kyle Shattuck, and Dick Reynolds.
Mandoka, Buskirk, and Husted all scored heats.
Sunday night had Vern Buskirk returning to the Winner’s Circle after a
tough battle with Todd Bush and Greg Mandoka. Jeff Reist came home
fourth, followed by Chaney Newland, Renton Hurley, Dick Reynolds, Gary
Carman, Mike Husted, and Jason Borton. Reist and Jeff Loomis claimed
heat gold.
The Smokers Club of Mount Pleasant Street Stock Saturday night action
saw Larry Kosloski take his first win in a couple years after a hard
fought race with Josh Loomis and Will Stanley. Robert Griffin, Doug
McKeown, Sr., Al Kiester, James Prochazka, Dan Willmore, Mark Lamb,
Kyle Prochazka rounded out the top ten. Stanley and Kevin Rohn were
winners in the early going.
Sunday saw another hard fought race as Rohn took his turn in the
Winner’s Circle over A.J. Ward, Jim Miller, Jr., Mark Lamb, Josh
Loomis, Lloyd Long, Doug McKeown, Sr., Al Kiester, Larry Kosloski, and
Anthony Carlton. Ward was later DQ’d for refusing a motor claim. Kyle
Prochazka and Rohn both won heats.
The Port City Racing Pro Trucks raced Saturday night and Scott Nieman
pulled off the win over a coming Chris Verhaar. David Dancer, Mike
Kresnak, Tim Wood, Brian LeBaron, Tim Sooy, Jerry Koons, and Robert
Verhaar rounded out the top ten of the field. Neiman also took the
heat.
Sunday night, the Trucks were off to make way for the Michigan
Traditional Sprints. After wrecking his main car the night before,
Steve Irwin took full advantage of his pole starting position and ed
all 25 laps from the pole position to take his first feature victory
of the season over Mark Broughman, Landon Simon, Tim Lowe, Brent
Smith, Mike Berkin, Mike Galajda, Mike Astrauskas, Keith Love, and
John Lowe.
Next week at Crystal Motor Speedway is sponsored by Engine Pro and
features all six regular division plus school bus races! Gates open at
4:30 and racing begins at 7:30. Adult admission to the grandstands is
$10 while kids 5-11 are $4. Pit passes are $25. If you need further
