Saturday night at Crystal Motor Speedway was another cool and windy
night but that didn’t stop the fans and drivers from congregating for
the first of two “Yes 2 Kids Night” where kids were able to ride with
one of their favorite drivers and then enjoyed some very exciting
racing. Six Lakes Auto Supply was the sponsor of the evening.
First on the menu was the Smokers Club of Mt Pleasant sponsored Street
Stock division. Brian Craigmyle and Doug McKeown did early battle for
the lead with Larry Kosloski and Kevin Rohn tight behind. After a
couple cautions, Craigmyle still lead the pack with Al Keister and
Gary Buskirk not far back and Mark Lamb closing. Buskirk was able to
make the late pass for the lead and then his first feature win of
2009. Craigmyle held on for second, followed by Kiester, Kyle
Prochazka, Kosloski, Dan Willmore, Rohn, Ryan Lewis, Abe Wright, and
Lamb. Craigmyle and Rohn grabbed heat wins.
Rusty Seaver found his way to the front in early part of the Kentucky
Fried Chicken sponsored Late Models with Kevin Nelson Jr., Ryan
Vanderveen, and Brock Cogswell all in the chase. About eight laps in,
Vanderveen and Brandon Gunia tangled in fight for third, spilling all
over the front stretch, involving several cars. Once back under green,
Seaver and Nelson were still battling with Mark Andersen slowly
reeling them in. Seaver was coming into lapped traffic and was trying
to find place to pass Gunia when Nelson came screaming in below him to
take the lead. With two laps to go, Seaver, Andersen, Kyle Borgman and
Curtis Roberts were all fighting for position and they tangled with
the lapped Gunia, sending everyone spinning again. On the restart,
Nelson was able to hold on in a one lap shoot out for the win.
Andersen held on for second, followed by Seaver, Borgman, Roberts,
Richard Neiser, Cogswell, Jay Van Dyke, Rob Taylor, and Tim Stott. Van
Dyke and Matt Pickard took B Main wins while Roberts, Seaver, and
Nelson snatching heat wins.
Flinn Stock
Brady Hollenbeck took the early lead in the Big V Photos/Races On The
Web Flinn Stock division but a quick caution bunched the field again.
When the green fell again, emerging power house Ashlee Scott came
flying up on the leader to take the lead. While Scott checked out on
the field, Neil Zeigler, Gavin Parks and Cory Burch were left fighting
for position behind her. Hollenbeck began to pull within a length or
so of Scott but then began to battle back and forth with Zeigler,
allowing Scott to pull away again. Lee Zahm began to creep forward but
then suffered some mechanical problems and fell back for a lap before
getting back to hard racing. Scott began to lap the field as the race
ended, earning her third win of 2009. Hollenbeck came in second,
followed by Parks, Zahm, Daniel Corder II, Randall Stevens, Zeigler,
Zach Messner, Ken Zeigler, and Burch. Hollenbeck and Burch brought
home heat wins.
The Port City Racing sponsored Pro Stock division found Mike Husted
out front with Kyle Shattuck, Derrick Dennis, Vern Buskirk, Jason
Borton and Chaney Newland tightly bunched behind him. Husted and
Buskirk kept out front and began to hit lapped traffic but a debris
caution tightened the field. The restart had Dennis and Husted
exchanging the lead back and forth with Buskirk glued to their bumpers
and Nate Jones rapidly charging forward. Buskirk found an opening and
jumped to the lead. Dennis and Jones worked each other for second with
Chaney Newland coming but they were never able to catch Buskirk, who
scored his second win of 2009. The rest of the top ten were Dennis,
Newland, Husted, Jeff Reist, Borton, Shattuck, Scott Bouck, Brett
Hollenbeck, and Lee Williams. Dennis and Buskirk took heats.
Mike Kresnak has been away from the Speedway for a couple years but
had no problem as he jumped out front of the Port City Racing
sponsored Pro Truck division. Kevin Deal held second place but Kresnak
held a comfortable lead. Tim Hansen and Chris Verhaar were engaged in
some tight racing when they tangled and spun, taking Wood with them.
On the restart, Kresnak continued to lead but Verhaar was pushing him
hard. Coming down to the final lap, Verhaar tried a final time but
Kresnak held on for his first win of 2009, followed by Verhaar, Deal,
David Dancer, Brian LeBaron, Tim Wood, Hansen, Scott Nieman, Robert
Verhaar, and Troy Salsbury. Neiman took the heat.
The final event of the night was the Engine Pro sponsored IMCA
Modified race found Buzz Lawrence grabbing the early lead and then
spent most of the race fighting
off Tim Lytle, Chad Wernette, JR Schmid, Milt Montgomery, and Joe
Fowler the entire race. Lawrence kept his machine running a near
perfect groove and was able to pull away on several different restarts
as he held on to win his feature of 2009. Lytle brought home a second,
followed by Wernette, Schmid, Ryan Alexander, Chad Maurer, Mickey
Carman, Jr., Rusty Zeigler, Mike Vandermark, Jr., and Roger Flinn III.
Next week at Crystal Motor Speedway is the big two day race event as
we celebrate Memorial Day. Saturday is the Janet Zeigler Memorial race
night with all six of the normal divisions competing. Sunday has the
Michigan Traditional Sprints (non-winged) on hand, giving the Pro
Trucks the evening off. Grandstand admission for each night is $10 for
adults and kids 5-11 are $4. Pit passes are $25. Further information
